I’d really like to have a less restrictive exhaust installed on my ‘91 MR2, but I haven’t been able to find headers that are certified CARB-legal. Where should I be looking for upgrades?
The stock exhaust manifold is very restrictive on the 2.2L 5S-FE 4-cylinder engine, resulting in only 130 horsepower. In addition to the stock headers, the intake manifold is also a severe bottleneck in power delivery. The intake runners are almost a foot long, optimized for low-end torque.

I would like to build up the current motor in my car, but I’m not sure where to find emissions-compliant parts to do so.
Anybody know where to source something for this? My Google-searching isn’t getting me anything.

You probably won’t get much power out of that motor even if you did manage to find a carb legal intake and exhaust. What’s the most hp that you would pick up?
The option I see that probably isn't a good idea would be a supercharger.

It could be that no one makes a CARB listed exhaust anymore. There used to be a CARB website that had all the approved listings and you could sort by car. If HisStigness is around he could probably help.

Um, no, the 4AGE’s a breather. It’ll build. It’s not an easy build, but it will build.

That’s the website Junkrat was looking for.
Failing that, I think you can still do one-offs with tailpipe testing. But a CA lawyer would be the one to verify with.

Buy a pre-1975 car and install whatever you like.

Sadly, it doesn’t sound like His Stigness plans on being around anymore. Suppose there’s always a chance he comes back.

5s-fe, and any motor is going to build more power if you make it breath better, but t alking about carb legal bolt ons f or an unsupported motor, you will not gain much.

There’s actually another way around it, although it requires two engine swaps.
Swap it to a 1991, 1992, 1996, or 1997 Volkswagen diesel engine with all of that emissions equipment , get it re-titled as a diesel (IIRC 1998+ diesels get smogged, hence the acceptable model years ) , swap it back to a gasoline engine.
This isn’t actually legal , but it means there’s no smog any more for it, AFAIK, if you’re doing something that meets emissions standards but not certifications.
And at that point, just swap it to a 2ZZ-GE once and actually get it certified that way.

I’m having a related issue with my NB’s downpipe. It has a Racing Beat downpipe installed, which is great, except I’d need to get someone to re-install the air/fuel sensor, as it’s currently throwing a Check Engine light.
This was OK when I lived in Michigan, but I’m in Illinois now, and they check emissions.

Honest question because I live in one of the free states, what is the enforcement mechanism on that rule? Will you actually get caught if you install a non CARB legal part and what is the worst The bureaucrats can do?

The 2.2 NA motor pickups hardly any HP at all from mods. I've owned 4 different MR2s since 1992. Never owned an NA MKII but have followed folks on the boards and early mailing lists that spent thousands of dollars on that engine that never got anywhere close to what they could have gotten with either a turbo swap or just selling the NA and buying a Turbo.

Spending money on mods for a 5SFE is just throwing money away. Enjoy the torquey, responsive engine and good fuel economy for what it is, but if you want power, a 3S or V6 swap is the only way to go that makes any kind of economic sense.

If only there were a guy on here who knew a ton of CARB stuff and had experience doing emissions repairs...

By CARB exhaust modifications can not move the placement of the catalytic converter. Hence why the the only CARB approved headers for my GTO are short tube, because the cats stay in the stock location. And @ $3k for the set I don’t find it worthwhile.
So I may or may not just switch out the long tubes for the stock exhaust at smog time.
I can’t wait to leave this shitty state
